“Erv”

Erv Zick, age 82, died on Friday, January 13, 2006, at Franciscan Care Center, Appleton. Erv was born on April 10, 1923, in Beaver Dam, to the late Erwin H. and Marie (Lambrecht) Zick. He married Gertrude Stehling on January 26, 1943, in Beaver Dam; she preceded him in death on October 16, 1998. Erv was a machinist and pattern maker at Allis Chalmers for many years. Erv proudly served his country in the United States Air Corps during World War II. He was highly decorated, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and many others. Erv’s service included 47 combat missions and 260 combat flight hours as navigator of a B-24 bomber. He served in the Air Corps until November of 1947 when he joined the Wisconsin National Guard. He was the Commander of Company E (Beaver Dam) of the 128th Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Infantry Division. He was activated during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 and served at Ft. Lewis, Washington. After more than 20 years of military service, Erv retired in as a Major. Erv was also an instructor for the Civil Air Patrol in Appleton. In recognition of his exemplary service to his country, the City of Appleton and his former flight crew honored him with the “Erv Zick Day” in 1994. Survivors include his daughters, Jane (Jeff) Breuer, Pardeeville, Wisconsin; Marie Close, Appleton; Margaret (Walter) Altenhofen, Appleton; and Marion (James) Olson, Green Bay; his son, Erwin H (Connie) Zick, Weyauwega; his brother, Gerald Zick, Richland Center, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Christina, Steven, Tina, Erwin, Erika, Carissa, Joseph, Rebecca, Donald, Sarah, Travis, Jessica, Josh, Katherine, Erick; his great grandchildren, Mikhail, Kendal and Alexis. He was preceded in death by his brother John (Joyce) Zick and his sister-in-law, Betty Zick. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 North MacDonald Street, Appleton, with Fr. Gerald Falk officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial has been established in his name. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton, where military honors will be conducted. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Franciscan Care Center for their loving care.
