Betty Jean Werner

Betty Werner, age 80, of Appleton, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013. She was born on September 10, 1932 in Appleton, the daughter of the late Ervin and Helga “Dolly” (Hanson) Werner. Betty graduated from Appleton Senior High School. She received her BS degree in physical education from LaCrosse State Teachers College, and her MS degree from Northern Michigan University. Betty was the first teacher hired by the Appleton School District to start a physical educational program for the elementary schools and taught for 37 years.
In her earlier years she enjoyed traveling, canoeing, and camping; dog sitting for friends. Betty later enjoyed planting and working with flowers in her yard; feeding and watching birds; reading, doing puzzles, knitting, and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton.
Betty is survived by her sister: Ruth (John) George of Appleton; a brother: Ray (Dorothy) Werner of Tacoma, Washington; and sister-in-law: Blanche Werner of Riverside, California. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews along with their families, and many good friends. Betty was preceded in death by her sisters: Helen Chevalier and Ann Baehman; brothers: Joe, Dick, and Gene Werner.
The funeral service for Betty will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church, 129 S. Mason Street, Appleton. Rev. Paul T. Schuler will be officiating. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 9:00 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to her church are appreciated. Online condolences can be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
