Bette Mae Roberts

May 9, 1932 — April 22, 2005

Age 73, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 22, 2005. Bette was born May 9, 1932 in Portage County, daughter of the late Ben and Lenora (Barden) Towne. As a young girl, she took up residence with a dear aunt and uncle “Daddy” Ervin and “Auntie” Vera Martin, who raised Bette. On September 29, 1949, Bette married Thomas Roberts in Bear Creek; he survives. When her daughters were young, Bette was a Girl Scout Leader. She also enjoyed needlework of all kinds, but had special talent when it came to cross-stitch. There is not a relative who wasn’t the recipient of a hand-made gift from Bette. She also enjoyed vacationing and fishing with Tom at Pelican Lake. As a senior citizen, she was also proud to have purchased and mastered her home computer!

Bette will be remembered as a strong-willed and loving and independent wife, mother, and grandmother who always placed the needs of her family ahead of those of her own. Bette was very family oriented and always insisted that family activities be the focus of her activity. She was also a woman of quiet determination who supported everyone in their opinions, who seldom spoke a harsh work, and who never held a grudge. It was always important to Bette to be independent, and to never become a burden to anyone. Lord knows she never had to worry about that.

Bette is survived by her husband: Tom Roberts of Kimberly; three daughters: Mary Hogen of Kaukauna; Judy Roberts of Kaukauna; and Carol (Sean) Cassidy of Burleson, Texas; two sons: Jim (Diane) Roberts of Appleton and Jack Roberts of Monterey, California and his special friend Mary Ann; her only and very special granddaughter: Katie Roberts; six grandsons: Ryan Roberts, Jeremy Hogen, Jason (Sara) Roberts, Mike Roberts, Scott Roberts, and Deon Roberts; two great-grandchildren: Emily and Haley Roberts; two sisters: Shirley (David) Huhn of Kimberly and Nancy (Gary) Strebe of Appleton; two sisters-in-law: Karen (Ken) Uhland of Pulaski and Cathy Roberts of New London; two brothers-in-law: Larry Getchell of Lily, Wisconsin and Howie (Denise) Gaudette of Florida. Bette is also survived by Tom’s brothers and sisters: Francis Roberts of Clintonville; Anna Burch of Stevens Point; Joyce (Morris) Stilen of Shiocton; Gladys (Clyde) Meyer of Bear Creek; Laura (Rick) Kuehn of Sturgeon Bay; and John Roberts of Kaukauna; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, by “Daddy” Ervin and “Auntie” Vera Martin, a brother Robert Towne, sisters Nila Getchell and Carol Gaudette, sisters-in-law Anita Roberts and Marie Roberts, and brothers-in-law James Roberts as an infant, Fabian (Myrtle) Roberts, Bernie Burch, and Paul Roberts.
