Bernard Fassbender

December 8, 1912 — October 16, 2003

Age 90, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2003 at Rennes Health Center, following a long illness resulting from a massive stroke in 1998. He was born December 8, 1912 in Hollandtown, Wisconsin son of the late Henry and Ida (Schultz) Fassbender. Butch married Marie Campbell on May 7, 1946 in Hilbert, Wisconsin.

Butch a lifelong resident of Hollandtown, took over the running of his father’s cheese factory, White Clover Dairy at the age of 22, and presided over its development and growth for the next 58 years. Butch was also the founder of Holland Veal Inc., starting this new venture in 1977. He was very involved in Wisconsin’s dairy industry, and also served as a Director of the Whey Products Institute. The community of Hollandtown was important to him, and he was a member of the Hollandtown Volunteer Fire Department, and President of the Hollandtown Sanitary District. A lifelong member of St. Francis Parish, he served on the St. Francis Building Committee, and was instrumental in raising the funds for the development of the Hollandtown Community Park. Butch was also a Director at the Forest Junction/F&M Bank. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, having no greater joy than spoiling his grandchildren, as well as a loyal friend to many. Throughout his whole life as he was working the long hours to make White Clover what it is today, he never forgot the importance of his church and community, and the love of his family.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Marie; his sons: Richard (Bonnie) Fassbender, Hollandtown; Gary (Susan) Fassbender, Appleton; and Daniel (Wende) Fassbender, Hollandtown; a sister: Mildred Gerharz, Kaukauna; and sisters-in-law: Stella Fassbender, Kaukauna; Dolores Fassbender, Land O’ Lakes; and a brother-in-law: Victor Busse, Hollandtown. He is further survived by nine grandchildren: Richard (Jill) Fassbender, Seymour; Kevin Fassbender, Kaukauna; Jay Fassbender, Hollandtown; Michael (Elena) Fassbender, Kaukauna; Kimberly Fassbender, Hollandtown, Kathryne and Bryan Fassbender, Appleton; Amanda and Jennifer Fassbender, Hollandtown, and great granddaughter: Tatjana Fassbender, Kaukauna. Butch is further survived by a brother-in-law: Arthur (Inie) Campbell and Leo (Angie) Campbell and many nieces and nephews.

Butch was preceded in death by a son: Dennis; and siblings: Harold (Mary) Fassbender, Lorraine (Elmer) Vandenberg, Norbert Fassbender, brothers-in-law: LeRoy Gerharz, Hubert Fassbender, Ann (Syd) Derry and Rosemary Busse.

The funeral liturgy for Butch will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 10:00 AM at ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Hollandtown, with Fr. Jim Lucas officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday (TODAY) from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and again Saturday, directly at the church from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
